Embrace Fallout realism.
Seriously. My first Fallout experience was FO3 on the PS3, in 2008. I liked it, beat the game, thought it was interesting but went on to other games. Then I picked it up for PC and started modding, and that just opened up the entire Fallout mythos for me. Went back and played FO1/2/Tactics, and then FNV, and such as such.
Start with IMCN and disabling fast travel. Then get Fellout on that puppy and get rid of the green. There are a ton of great mods out there that add complex realism aspects to the game, so gradually every decision you make in the game is an important one. Fallout is an entirely different experience when basic survival is your worst boss battle.
IMHO, the best thing about learning to mod is that you can make the game as tough as you want, and build in as much replay value as you can imagine. Besides, you'll help Bethesda come up with gameplay ideas for FO4.
