The advantages of two wastelands.

Post by Sal The Thief » Sun Oct 05, 2014 9:17 pm

So it's no surprise that having access to two wastelands means you have the potential for way more stuff, but let's talk specifics. What have you guys done to take advantage of the fact that you can travel between the Mojave and the Capital Wasteland?

I like to do Dead Money and max out on the amount of chips that I can get from the Casino. Then I spend it all on Sugar Bombs and take it to Murphy to sell. Last time I did this I made around 70k caps.

I use AWOP's, and they are both loaded with Pre-War books, I snag em all and bring em to DC. Last time I did this I got over 35k caps.

sounds like I might need to setup the prewar book turn in like the outcast training, no more exploits for you.

Change the money reward for each book from 100 to 10 caps (like scrap metal in Megaton) then instead getting 35k one gets 3500, no more exploiting around.

diminishing returns.  set a global to keep track of how many books have been turned in, then map a curve, stairstep it, and script it.

for instance, i drew a graph of x = (-y^2)/20 +500 -- where x axis is books turned in and y axis is reward  -- which gave me a nice curve to use for cap diminishing.  i decided to go by steps of 20 for arbitrariness, so when that global hits 180, she gives 80 caps, 320 for 60, 420 for 40, and 478 for 20, and if i want to be a real dick, i set it to 5 at 500.  that right there would dole out 37k for 500 books

I was joking at first, but something has to be done about the commonness of pre-war books in FNV... hrm.

There are plenty of ways to make a boat load of caps.  The main problem I had was draining the vendors of caps and running out of ammunition ... LOL.  That is why my new focus will be reloading/recharging, built in rechargeable weapons, and melee weapons.

I think 10 caps for a pre-war book is kinda chump-change. Sure, to the average wasteland illiterate, pre-war books might only be akin to unappreciated picture books (like ancient Egyptian scrolls discovered in the 19th/20th century by the Arabs), but to the right people (BoS, for example, like the scrolls to the English et al Egyptologists) those things are priceless.

As a Vault-Dweller, as opposed to the Arab, we'd know this.

However, the idea of diminishing returns is a nice way to counteract that, internally justifying it by the fact that, either, hey, the BoS only has so many caps on hand, or something along the lines of, yeah, these books are really useful, but at this rate, we'll really have a lot on our hands, and so on.

In FO3, I really thought that 100 caps was a rip-off for a piece of pre-war history and knowledge, and ended up always keeping the books myself.wink

Yes, sorry. I'm interested in people's ideas. I've never taken advantage of such a situation, but I've always thought that the possibility of being a cross-wasteland merchant-with-brahma was always a super cool idea.
