Idea for integrating TTW into a New Vegas Playthrough

Post by Drewkey » Wed May 28, 2014 6:51 pm

I have an idea of a mod... the crashed vertibird at the south of the nevada wasteland was on route from the capital wasteland with carrying important information about the downfall of the enclave in the region stored in one of the robots, when the courier destroys the carrying robot he finds a holocube with this info on it he sets out on a quest that will eventually lead him to the simulators at the boomers base, when the data from the holocube is integrated into the simulator it ends up as a VR simulator for playing the part of the kid from Vault 101...which is where TTW comes in of cause.

I can see a number of advantages of this:

  1. It allows people some ways through a play-through of FONV a way to add TTW seamlessly, without the need to start again... and thus improve the chances of it appearing in some of the more common you tube channels giving TTW some much needed exposure.

  2. It separates the wastelands to different levels of reality, which means that the accumulation of wealth and experience in one world space does not impinge upon the other reducing if not eliminating the need for additional balancing because of the additional content in TTW.

  3. It removes the issues with year difference between wastelands.

For achieving certain milestone within the Capital Wasteland the courier could be given more information about Enclave operations which could include the location of cache/bases within the confines of FONV, this would give the player an incentive to play through FO3, given that neither experience nor wealth could be transfered.

Of cause there are problems, one of which is that as travel between wastelands is now virtual, no mod that enabled physical travel would make sense and you could not move anything between wastelands.

I know that this goes against the TTW ethos of Two Wastelands One World, but I think it would make TTW more accessible and thus more widely known.

What do you think?

Honestly I don't think it has

Honestly I don't think it has to be this complicated. Say you just come across a shed were a mad scientist has created a time-travel machine or an inter-dimensional teleporter or some other such thing, that'd be good enough for me. Maybe one of those gene things they got in Assassins Creed?

You need the separation of realities provided by something like VR to account for you starting out being born when traveling to the Capital Wasteland for the first time so that the main story line makes sense. Also the removing of physical travel between the two wastelands resolves a lot of other issues.

So you go into a VR to go to the capital wasteland - where at some point throughout your journeys you go into a VR to go to Anchorage? [Head Explodes]

And what about Tranquility lane? Your simulated dad becomes a simulated dog in the simulation inside the simulation where the simulated Dr. Braun became a simulated small girl in is own simulated little world inside another big simulated world and...

By the way, the only problems I see with this idea is, every time the player would go into the simulation, the game would need to know which level, experience, karma, perks, skills, reputation, quests, and so on, plus all the inventory items and which equipment the player is using at the moment so it can get rid of all of those and be in the simulation starting from scratch. Then the game would have to do the same thing back when returning to the "real world", I have no idea how to make the game generate a new character and then go back to the old, then back to the new, rinse and repeat how many times you want to. Challenges would also have to be reset and then given back, The quests which I mentioned before would have to disappear from the "virtual" pipboy to the "real" one and then put them all back again and vice versa.

I think it might not be possible, unless we end up with all the quests and challenges and stuff appearing on both pipboys at the same time, and that would look really strange. Also no items or perks could pass from one to another world like I said before...

Having both games separated by a system like this is almost has playing Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas without merging them cheeky.

Yeah well I was just trying

Yeah well I was just trying to think outside the box and get TTW some more recognition by making it more accessible to people who are doing let's plays of New Vegas or part way through a New Vegas Play through.

I thought that perhaps it might be possible to keep one save in a special slot for each wasteland that is saved to / loaded from on transferring from one wasteland to another, then all that you have to do is work out a clear-down mechanism for the initial transition to the capital wasteland.

I do admit that this idea does limit the interaction between the wastelands to a great extent but I can't see a way to accomplish the transition from New Vegas to Fallout 3 and keep any sort of narrative consistency.

The courier becomes dad. Then

The courier becomes dad. Then all you need is a way to get rid of all the junk from that char and you're good. After that the LW can go to NV when he's a big boy.
