Tale of Two Wastelands on Steam

Post by Zagzagel » Sat Jul 01, 2023 12:02 am

I'm sorry if this question has been asked before, I haven't found an answer yet.

I've got both Fallout 3 GOTY and Fallout New Vegas. (I've started playing FNV for a while.) I've played them both to the end a while ago, and I've started playing them again. I used to have TTW in the past but that was on non Steam games. Does anyone know if there's any way to get the games to work together on Steam without a problem?

I'm using NMM for a few mods on both and haven't had any real problems using it on either game. I think when you use TTW installer it basically turns FO3 into a mod for FNV? I did have a couple of problems installing one or two mods on FNV. Notably Electro-City and Freeside Compatibly Patch, New Vegas Uncut - Freeside Open, and finally MNCs Texture Pack for New Vegas. I've uninstalled all of those mods and the game runs fine now.

But I don't know if the FO3 combination with TTW will overwhelm FNV. Does anyone know how to do this without any problems? I remember when I had it installed before I really enjoyed the ability to switch back and forth between the two games.

Just to let you know the reason you likely had issues installing Electro City Is that the mod is 12 years out of date, it's usually recommended in most guides not to try to install it because it's broken now and causes game crashes.
The same with Open Freeside, It's 10 years out of date and breaks the game engine, there is a newer and lighter version available that was created in the past decade.

Plus Nexus Mod Manager is very out-of-date too and not really a useful tool anymore, I don't even think they have worked on it for the past 5+ years.
Try using Mod Organiser 2 it looks complicated but it's actually extremely easy-to-use, I started using Vortex which is the replacement for NNM and actually found that to be worse and more counterintuitive than MO2.

This is from a community guide of very experienced modders that have far greater knowledge than I do.

The texture pack is also the same, it has a lot of issues nowadays as it's very old. There is a guide to combine all of it and a script that can be used to quickly remove all of the problematic textures, there are also plenty of other texture packs that are much newer and more comprehensive.

My advice would be don't install mods like it's 2013 :D

Joking aside, there are now some amazing guides that talk you through how to set up a perfectly stable base game with a huge number of mods, Including fully re-texturing the entire game in both wastelands.
So even if you're experienced, I am very much so, but I haven't touched FO3/NV/TTW in many many years so I didn't carry on where I last left it, I found out what was new and how things are done now, and with that new knowledge went from there.
